Adabraka, ACCRA. July 14, 2022: The African University College of Communications (AUCC) has instituted a scholarship scheme to benefit the youth of Adabraka in Accra. Beginning the next academic year, nominated candidates from Adabraka community will be admitted under this scholarship scheme to AUCC to undertake a four—year degree program in communication or business administration without paying a pesewa.

This was revealed when a delegation from the Adabraka Otuopai Palace paid an official visit to the college’s president, Prof. Abeku Blankson on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the Discovery House, Adabraka. The delegation was led by the Head of Clan, Rev. (Rtd) Titus Glover.

Rev. Glover was accompanied by Adabraka Queen mother Naa Korkor Aadzieoyi and the acting Otuopai Mantse Nii Addy Kuaku V.

The visit was a follow-up to a scholarship proposal by the Otuopai family made early this year. The first scholarship shall commence from the next academic year which starts from September, 2022.

Also present at the meeting were AUCC Registrar Dr. Juliana Owusu-Ansah, Dean of the Kojo Yankah School of Communication Studies Dr. Jim Awindor, Dean of the Sam E. Jonah School of Business Prof. Vijay Bhasin, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts Dr. Kemi Wale-Olaitan, and acting Head of Corporate Affairs Benjamin Osei Boateng.

In his remarks, Prof Abeku Blankson indicated that the initiative, the first of many to come, focuses on building a robust scholarship program that will help enroll to AUCC some of the brightest young minds from the Adabraka community.

“It will provide access to those in need, and extend opportunities to prospective students who can benefit from academic enrichment opportunities created by the university,” explained Prof. Blankson.

“The proposed name for the scheme is AUCC-Otuopai Community Scholarship. We consider this as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility to the community we operate from.” He said.

He revealed that recipients will be required to demonstrate financial need, value academic excellence, exhibit personal integrity, and show an interest in the chosen program.

“In my heart, I am very happy,” said Otuopai Head of Clan Rev. Glover. “This is the legacy I have always wanted to leave behind. Thank you, AUCC”, he added.

Rev. Glover said the scholarship would help the vulnerable and needy youth in the Adabraka community to pursue higher education at one of Ghana’s best private universities.

The Adabraka Queen mother Naa Aadzieoyi recounted several collaborations between her NGO “Read4Me” and AUCC’s Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing, including the #OneBookOneCommunity Project, and #ReadingClinic.

“AUCC is the first university in Accra that has created a scholarship scheme for our community. Wow!” she gushed.

Under the scholarship, the Otuopai Clan is expected to present names of qualified candidates for consideration. Candidates will participate in a rigorous application and interview process before being selected to receive the scholarship, which will cover full tuition for every academic year.

Ghana has a young age structure, with approximately 57% of the population under the age of 25.

Since September, 2021, the new Management of AUCC led by Prof. Blankson has continued to deepen the ties between the institution and the community and other global partners.
