I’m Not Defending Any Chinese – Baba Jamal

Accra – October 15, 2022: Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, a lawyer and a former Member of Parliament, says he has not been involved in defending Chinese illegal miners in court.

This was on the back of a Daily Guide report that the lawyer represented five Chinese illegal miners during his tenure of service.

He said this on Peace FM’s Morning Show:

“Those people who were arrested were not at the galamsey site but was at the hotel where alleged illegal miners lodged”.

“It is very important that when someone is accused of something, we don’t judge the person instantly. Sometimes, the person have no hand in whatever case or whatsoever but just a suspect or was with a culprit. When you hear that someone is defending an illegal miners, we should investigate to know which part the Lawyer stands. It might be that, his client was just accused of illegal mining.”

The former member of parliament said Daily Guide should have called him to confirm whatever they heard about him before going ahead to publish false news about him.

“I won’t sue them or call for retraction of statement; I answered this on your station because of the public”. He said.

He reiterated that the Chinese he is defending now in court is an accused person who slept in the hotel of illegal miners and was arrested together with the culprits. He again said that, the true case of his Chinese client is that, the illegal miners slept at the hotel in the name of his client.

Baba Ahmed disclosed further that even though he was born in the mining community of AKwatia, he has never engaged in any illegal mining.
