Vanessa Vanderpuye Wins Maiden KAAR Prize

April 26, 2023, Adabraka ACCRA: L300 journalism student Vanessa Naa Okialey Vanderpuye won the maiden Korkor Amarteifio Art Reviewing (KAAR) Prize with her piece “Unveiling the Magic of Neglect: A Reflection on Brooks Anne Robinson’s ‘Reality’”. The Prize came with a citation, 500Ghana Cedis and an all-expenses paid trip to Takoradi to join the judging panel of the forthcoming PaintSculpt exhibition.

In all 13 entries were received, out of which four were shortlisted. Announcing the winner and presenting the prize this morning at the Ama Ata aAidoo Centre for Creative Writing, Korkor Amarteifio, after whom the Prize is named, expressed joy for the quality of entries presented.

“Most of the pieces were great, and therefore there is no loser here today. Unfortunately, as you know, the Prize goes to one review, and I am happy to announce that the winner for this maiden award goes to Vanessa Vanderpuye.”

Vanderpuye’s winning piece “Unveiling the Magic of Neglect: A Reflection on Brooks Anne Robinson’s ‘Reality’”, is a beautifully and vividly written review in which she makes her personal experience resonate with the larger issues of being alive in the world.

Eligibility to Apply

The Korkor Amarteifio Art Reviewing Prize is open to all Level 300 journalism students at AUCC writing in English. Entrants are required to submit a piece of critical writing about a contemporary art exhibition held anywhere in Accra during AVIEW (Accra Visual Arts Festival) in April of the year. The exhibition must have been open to the public at some stage during this period.

Submissions may be no longer than 1,200 words in length. Submissions may be accompanied by a maximum of three images of the relevant exhibition, which are cleared for publication (with full captions and acknowledgments).

All entries will be anonymized for the judges at Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing at AUCC, but please include Index Number for administrative purposes.

Publishing rights on all texts must be assigned to the organizers (Konyo Museum of Ghanaian Art).

The winner is chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Description
  • Analysis
  • Interpretation
  • Judgment

The Selection Process

The objectivity of the selection process is underpinned, both by the recognized professionalism of the jury members at the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing and by the strict anonymity of the judging process. All valid entries will initially be sorted and shortlisted by the Ama Ata Aidoo Centre for Creative Writing and the shortlist will be forwarded to academic partners in the Journalism Department at AUCC for final selection.
