In the last five years, Gerrard has earned recognition for his talent in identifying and nurturing musical talent.

His journey in the music industry began with a passion for discovering and developing emerging artists. His ability to recognize potential in artists has not only contributed to their success but has also elevated his own status within the industry. Now in his third year at AfricanUniversity College of Communications (AUCC), Gerrard’s keen A&R skills quickly set him apart, allowing him to build affiliations with some of the most promising and influential musical talents of our time.

Gerrard’s role as a PR maven has further amplified his influence. He possesses a remarkable talent for crafting compelling narratives that resonate with both artists and audiences. His strategic communication skills have been pivotal in shaping the public image of artists under his guidance, leading to widespread acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

As a Music Executive, Gerrard has played a crucial role in shaping the trajectory of the industry. His collaborations with renowned music record labels, including the likes of Stonebwoy and Burniton Music Group (BMG), have solidified his position as a key player in the music scene. Under his leadership, these affiliations have not only produced chart-topping hits but have also fostered an environment where artistic creativity flourishes.

Zahida Abdul Wahid: Can you share some aspects of your early life and the challenges you faced growing up that ultimately shaped your journey into the PR field?

Gerrard-Israel: Growing up in a financially constrained environment, I faced the challenge of limited resources and opportunities. However, these early struggles instilled in me a tenacious work ethic and a deep appreciation for effective communication, as I often found solace and strength in the power of words.

ZAW: How did you make the transition from a challenging childhood to joining the PR team of a prominent artist like Stonebwoy?

GI: The transition from a challenging childhood to the dynamic world of PR was marked by my passion for storytelling. Networking and building a robust portfolio became crucial. Eventually, my dedication caught the attention of industry professionals, leading to a position on Stonebwoy’s PR team, where I could seamlessly merge my love for communication and music.

ZAW: What motivated you to pursue education at AUCC, and how has the knowledge gained there enhanced your skills in PR and writing?

GI: Motivated by a thirst for knowledge and skill development, I chose AUCC for its reputable communication program. The education I receive provides a comprehensive understanding of PR strategies, media relations, and effective writing. The practical experiences, industry insights from professors, and networking opportunities significantly enhances my capabilities in the field

ZAW: I would really want to know specifically how your education at AUCC has specifically contributed to your success in the PR field, and what aspects of your studies you find most beneficial in your current role.

GI: AUCC’s education has been instrumental in my success, providing a strong theoretical foundation and practical skills. Courses in media relations and strategic communication equip me with tools essential for navigating the dynamic PR landscape. The hands-on experiences and industry-focused curriculum are particularly beneficial in preparing me for the challenges of the real-world PR environment.

ZAW: Balancing a role in an international superstar such as Stonebwoy’s PR team and pursuing education can be demanding. How did you manage both, and what lessons did you learn during this time?

GI: Balancing a role in Stonebwoy’s PR team and pursuing education demands meticulous time management. I have learned to prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and delegate when necessary. This period has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of strategic planning, skills that continue to be invaluable in my career.

ZAW: You’re known for your strong writing skills. How did you develop this talent, and what advice do you have for aspiring writers in the field of PR?

GI: My writing skills evolved through a combination of formal education, continuous practice, and real-world application. Engaging in diverse writing styles, such as press releases, social media content, and artist biographies, contributed to honing my craft. My advice to aspiring PR writers is to embrace versatility, stay updated on industry trends, and seek constructive feedback for continual improvement.

ZAW: Working with a big artist like Stonebwoy requires strategic PR. Can you share some experiences or strategies that have been particularly effective in your role?

GI: Working with Stonebwoy involves a multifaceted approach. Crafting compelling narratives that align with the artist’s brand, engaging fans through various platforms, and maintaining an authentic voice are paramount. Successful strategies include leveraging exclusive content, discreetly managing crises, and staying ahead of industry trends to ensure the artist’s positive image.

ZAW:  Given your journey, what message do you have for individuals facing challenges who aspire to follow a similar path into the PR field or the music industry?

GI: To those facing challenges, I advocate for embracing adversity as a catalyst for growth. Networking, persistence, and finding mentors are crucial. Your unique journey can be an asset in the PR world; authenticity resonates with audiences and colleagues alike.

ZAW:  Reflecting on your career, can you share a particularly memorable or challenging moment that significantly impacted your growth in the industry?

GI: A particularly memorable moment was successfully navigating a crisis by addressing concerns transparently. This experience not only showcased the power of effective communication but also strengthened my relationship with both the artist and the audience, marking a significant turning point in my career.

ZAW: Looking ahead, what are your future goals, both in terms of personal and professional development, and how do you envision your role with Stonebwoy evolving?

GI: Looking ahead, my future goals involve continuous learning and potentially pursuing advanced PR certifications. I envision playing a pivotal role in Stonebwoy’s evolving brand, contributing to strategic decisions, and expanding our reach in the global music industry – well, I am actually doing that now. Personal growth and professional development are at the forefront, with an aim to remaining innovative and adaptive in the ever-evolving field of PR.
